I have a broad interest in body-brain interactions and the different research methods we can use to investigate this connection. Here you can find some of my ongoing projects.

INTERSTATE

State-dependent interoception: examining the dynamics of viscera-brain coupling in action, emotion, and self-consciousness.

Our brain is coupled to our the visceral rhythms coming from within our body, but is our brain capable of tuning in to one of these rhythms, like changing the channel on a radio, under different circumstances? And is there a benefit to be able to flip the channel or even changing the volume? INTERSTATE investigates how viscera-brain coupling can dynamically change across three different domains: action, emotion, and self-consciousness. To answer these questions, the project uses various neuroimaging technichques, such as M/EEG, TMS-EEG, and physiological recordings. You can find more information about the project here.

VIBRAM

Leveraging state dependent viscera-brain coupling to identify novel treatment targets for mental health disorders.

Does the strength with which our brain is tuned into our internal organs impact our mental health? And if this is indeed the case, can we feasible change the coupling between body and brain either by having people perform certain tasks or through non-invasive brain stimulation methods? In this project we test the link between changes in organ-specific body-brain coupling and transdiagnostic markers of mental health. You can read more about the project and its team here.

This 4-year project is funded by the Research Council of Finland (Suomen Akatemia) and involves collaborations with Kuopio University Hospital (Sara Määttä), the University of Copenhagen (Anke Karabanov), Paris Brain Institute (Marion Rouault) and Maastricht University (Sanne ten Oever).

DIGIMIND

Psychophysiological measurement and monitoring as a digital indicator of mental state.

DIGIMIND is a large consortium project co-funded by Business Finland and a collaboration between the University of Jyväskylä, Aalto University, and the University of Helsinki. The aim of DIGIMIND is to produce indicators of human psychophysiological state based on brain and autonomic nervous system measurements. As part of the Jyväskylä team I am focusing on lab-based experiments where we try to implement more naturalistic approaches to measuring affective states. Our dataset includes MEG-EEG and various physiological measures and aims at targeting the healthy population more broadly. You can read more about the project here.
